Cowhides have become very popular as floor rugs. In fact, 9 out of 10 hides we sell will be designated as a beautiful floor covering anywhere, from log cabins to upscale apartments.. So naturally, the question about care comes up frequently, so……..
Remember it is a cow, Mother Nature continues to protect the hair and leather so it’s virtually impossible to stain a cowhide. If you spill something on the cowhide, simply wipe it off with a damp cloth. If it is something more harsh such as chili, grape juice, etc., wet a cloth, add a small ratio of dish soap and then wipe if off. You will never know there had been an accident. If a house pet, we call them fur babies, should decide to use the cowhide as a territory marking ground, simply wipe the area to remove as much of the ‘gift’ as possible. Then we recommend wiping the area with a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water. Wiping with a little bleach infused water will kill bacteria left behind.
Rocks, tiny gravel particles and sand are the biggest threat to a cowhide and easiest to clean. Either vacuum with hand tool and/or shake out your cowhide periodically to free particles from your hide. Otherwise, as you continue to walk and apply weight across the tiny objects at the base of the hair/leather, you will begin to cut the hair over time. This is easy to prevent. The frequency will be determined by the amount of foot traffic.
